MATHEW 14: 13-21
CONCERN - COMPASSION – CARE

In this section we see that there were great crowds following Jesus, going around the north end of the Sea of Galilee, on foot.  We find here Jesus, the Messiah, able and willing to perform miracles and healing and feeding them.  We can also see Mathew’s call for mission in the two responses to solving the problem of feeding the huge multitude.

Two phrases stand out in this story, Two different responses to the same problem.  The crowd is huge.  They have been with Jesus and the disciples all day, and now at the end of the day they are hungry.

The disciples are concerned and feel responsible.  They want to do something but can’t think of a way.  The other gospels record them as saying that it would take 8 months wages to give the people only a bite of bread.

Their only solution – ‘Send the crowds away’.  Someone has said, ‘We need to be part of the answer, not just part of the problem’.  This is where the disciples failed.

Lord Jesus had a different idea.  He does not say ‘Send them’ but rather ‘you feed them’.  This may seem a bit harsh, but we read in chapter 10 the Lord had sent out the twelve with authority to perform great things.  But the disciples could not think beyond the ‘physical’.  They say, but we have only 5 loaves and 2 fish.  Where disciples stop with concern Jesus moves a step beyond with compassion.

In placing our attention on Jesus, the Messiah, Mathew focuses our attention on the Mission the disciples are called to continue.  In highlighting the richness of Jesus’ compassion he draws attention to the responsibility which disciples failed to fulfill.

One must move beyond just being concerned to having the same compassion as that of Jesus.  If we have compassion, that will spur us into action.  Let the words of Jesus to disciples echo in our ears – ‘You feed them’.

I conclude with the words of John Gladwin, a theologian – “It is because this is God’s world, and He cared for it to the point of incarnation and crucifixion, that we are inevitably committed to work for God’s justice in the face of oppression, God’s truth in the face of lies, for Love in the face of Selfishness, for reconciliation in the face of division”.
