A full fledged Nephrology and Dialysis Department came into formal existence in the year 1998 with the collaboration of Manipal Hospital, Bangalore. Since then Dr. G. K. Prakash (Consultant Nephrologist, from Manipal Hospital) has been in charge of the department. The Department of Nephrology and Dialysis deals with General Nephrology, Hemodialysis (acute as well as maintainance), acute Peritoneal Dialysis, Kidney biopsies and Kidney transplantations (Related). Seven machines are available for dialysis, one of which is dedicated for Retro-virus sero-positive patients in a separate cubicle. Approximately, 250-300 dialyses are being done per month as of now. Temporary access,through Internal Jugular or Femoral are done n the wards. A-V fistulas are done by our Surgeons in the OT. Our water treatment consists of state-of-the-art Reverse Osmosis water treatment plant which has been upgraded and installed this year (2012). The Consultant Nephrologist is available daily to see the inpatients and dialysis patients and to oversee the work of the Dialysis staff who are in charge of looking after the patients on a continual basis. The consultant is also available for outpatient consultation on prior appointment. The Dialysis Technician is in charge of the function and maintainance of the dialysis machines, RO p;ant as well as to help in cannulating difficult patients . The nursing staff deal with the dialysis patients initiating them on the machines, maintaining and disconnecting them off the machines, interacting with them to ensure they come at their respective slots for the dialyses, reporting to the doctors any additional information of day to day dialysis, maintaining a record of the patients as well as the consumables of the department.
