DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY

The Department of Pathology had its origin as a small laboratory under the charge of a technician when the Hospital came into existence 110 years ago. In 1968, the Laboratory services were expanded and established on more modern lines. A new block, was constructed and the units of Haemotology, Urine Analysis, Parasitology, Microbiology, Serology, Biochemistry and Blood Bank were installed, thus meeting the standards required by the CMAI Examination Board.

In 1969 Dr.Charles D’Souza, Professor of Pathology and Ex-Dean of the Bangalore Medical College joined the services of the CSI Hospital. He brought into the Department his vast experience and set up an excellent Department of Clinical Pathology, Cytology, Microbiology, Serology, Biochemistry and Histopathology.

Today, the Department functions as a well equipped department conducting routine investigations in Haematology, Biochemical investigations, Clinical Pathology, Microbiology, Special Serological tests, cytology & Histo-pathology and ELISA. On an average 70,600 tests  are conducted by the department per year.

The Medical Laboratory is one of the corner stones of Modern Medicine. Clinical Laboratory Tests have become the key element in most diagnostic procedures.  The general data submitted by the Laboratory for diagnosis is provided by the Laboratory Technician and is checked by the Tutor and Pathologist.

A Diploma Course in Medical Laboratory Technology was started in 1969  by  the Church of South India Hospital and eight technicians were trained annually for the CMAI Examination. This course was upgraded to a two-year course in 1990.  The Course is  affiliated to the Government of Karnataka Para Medical Board. Presently, four Candidates appear for the CMAI programme and all of them appear for the Examination held by the Government of Karnataka Para Medical Board. The syllabus for the course prescribed by the Government of Karnataka, Para Medical Board are:- Haemotology, Blood Bank, Biochemistry, Clinical Pathology, Microbiology, Cytology and Histopathology.

Every year, six students are admitted for the Diploma Course. The criteria for admission is for students with science subjects who have finished 10+2 / Pre-University Course. The students have facilities for indoor games and recreation. Picnics and religious retreats are organized annually.

The Department is well equipped,  including a Biochemistry Analyzer and Cryostat.
