"Martha
and Mary |
|
Two sisters Martha and Mary lived in Bethany, a village on the outskirts of Jerusalem. Jesus was their honored guest and both the sisters in their own way wanted to give their best to Jesus. We see a contrast of characters and temperaments in these two sisters: Martha was the practical one – she busied herself in preparing the best meal for the Lord, but Mary sat at the feet of Jesus listening to His teaching. This made Martha impatient because Mary had left her to do all the work by herself. She complains to the Lord and asks Him to tell Mary to come and help her. But Jesus gently rebukes Martha. He tells her that she is so worried and troubled about so many things that she lacks one important thing, which Mary has chosen – listening to Jesus. Martha was in no way less devoted to Jesus, but she failed to see the way of receiving Him that would please Him most. This narrative is not meant to show us the value of contemplative life compared with the life of action. It is to teach us that service to Jesus must not be misdirected to such an extent that we have no time to learn and listen to His word. Sitting at Jesus’ feet – there could be no better way of adoring our Lord! Question Golden Verse |
