DAY TO REMEMBER
Republic Day - January 26, 2004 was celebrated at the CSI Hospital at 9.30 am by the staff and students. A short worship services was conducted by Rev. Suresh Pawar, Chaplain, Religious Works Department. The National Flag was hoisted by Dr. Helen P. Samuel, the Medical Superintendent. Sweets were distributed to all present.
National Immunization Day (NID) - January 4, 2004 was observed as National Immunization Day for Pulse Polio Immunization. Polio Drops were administered free of charge to children under five years of age throughout the day.
There is an erroneous belief among many that pulse Polio Immunization (PPI) that is given twice every year to children below five years of age during the months of January and February is meant only for those children who have not completed their regular immunization. Nothing could be further from the truth! PPI is meant for all children under the age of five whether previously immunized or not. This is because the purpose of PPI is the Eradication of Poliomelitis. It works like this: The normal dwelling place of the poliovirus is the human gut (particularly that of young children). The virus cannot survive outside the human body for more than two weeks. The Polio Vaccine is nothing but the live poliovirus that has been rendered harmless – we shall call it the “vaccine virus “. Now when all children in the country are given the polio vaccine at the same time, the intestines of these children gets colonized by the vaccine virus leaving no place for the wild polio virus to grow and survive. Hence the wild poliovirus would die leading to eradication of the disease.
The next round of pulse polio immunization is on February 22, 2004. Let us all administer the polio drops to all our children and make the dream of eradicating this dreaded disease in our country a reality.

Lord, make me an Instrument of your peace
Where there is hatred,
Let me sow love.
Here there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith,
Where there is despair, hope,
Where there is darkness, light,
And where there is sadness, joy
O Divine Master, grant that
I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive
It is in pardoning that
We are pardoned;
And it is in dying that
We are born to eternal life.
- St. Francis of Assisi
