From the Scriptures

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

To Christmas the joy of Christmas is not limited to His birth. It is built even more on the triumph of His death and resurrection - that gave meaning to His birth. The mysterious spirit of generosity which possesses us at Christmas is the afterglow of Calvary. The fact of the cross illuminates this day and hallows it. As we exchange our gifts, let us remember that they are symbolic of the unspeakable gift of God's love. I do not believe that Christians should be giving expensive gifts to each other. We should quietly give simple little gifts that are expressions of our love and devotion to the recipients. These gifts become symbolic of the gift of God's love.

Christmas is not a myth, not a tradition, not a dream. It is a glorious reality. It is a time of joy. Bethlehem's manger crib became the link that bound a lost world to a loving God. From that manger came a Man who not only taught us a new way of life, but brought us into a new relationship with our Creator. Christmas means that God is interested in the affairs of people, that God loves us so much that He was willing to give His Son.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, as I remember Your birth in such a lowly stable,
Cleanse my heart that it might be a sanctified gift for you.

From the World of Medicine
Events of the Month
Dr. Christi Dominic Savio, Head, Department of Pediatrics

Three important events dominate the health calendar during the month of December. They are

  • World AIDS Day or the Red Ribbon Day
  • International Day of Disabled Persons
  • Human Rights Day

World AIDS Day or the Red Ribbon Day
Observed on the First of December every year, it is intended to spread the awareness of HIV / AIDS among all people particularly the youth. Knowledge of the disease and its mode of transmission will enable people to avoid all such behaviour that would make them vulnerable to the disease. Knowledge of the disease will also dispel misconceptions about the disease and help one to treat people with HIV / AIDS with compassion and concern, rather than treating them as untouchables. As per the 2004 estimates about 51 lakh people have been infected with HIV in India.

International Day of Disabled Persons
Ever since 1992, December 3rd has been observed as the International Day of Disabled Persons world over. Promoted by the United Nations Organization (UNO) the purpose is to sensitize the public about the disadvantages suffered by the disabled people in their life and to promote activities that would help them overcome their disabilities.
The theme for this year is "E-accessibility". It is common knowledge that access to information technology creates opportunities for people to earn their living. But the internet remains inaccessible to people with physical disabilities. For example a person with a disability of his hands may be unable to use the mouse and a person with defective sight may be unable to read the normal sized fonts. But these people would still be able to use the computer and internet if the IT industry could come out with special devices that could bypass the standard devices such as the mouse and the monitor.
This in a nutshell is the theme for this year. Making Information Technology accessible to the disabled person by providing him / her with special tools tailored for his need.

Human Rights Day
The Human Rights Day celebrated globally on the 10th of December every year commemorates the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UNO in 1948. The day is marked by conferences and cultural events highlighting the human rights which is not available in so many countries of the world.
According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights an individual has 30 basic rights. The UN encourages everyone to read this document and take a pledge to ensure that human being receives these rights. An Essay Contest has also been organized for children and youth (8 to 18 years) by the UN. For more details log on to http://www.un.org/cyberschoolbus/humanrightsday2006/guidelines1.asp
The deadline for the submission of the essay is 10th December 2006.
