World Breasfeeding Week August 1 – 7, 2003. An interactive session will be held at the OBG OPD on August 2, 2003 at 11.00 am. All mothers welcome.
Ever since 1992 the World
Alliance for Breasfeeding Action (WABA) and the Breastfeeding Promotion Network
of India ( BPNI ) have been observing the first week of August as the World
Breastfeeding Week in order to promote, support and protect from the
1st to the 7th of August. The theme for this year is
Breasfeeding in a Globalised World – for Peace and
Justice.
Some of the goals for this year’s WBW are:
It has now been proven beyond any doubt that mother’s milk is the best source of nutrition for the baby in the first year of life. For this reason it is recommended that our babies be exclusively breast-fed for at least the first three months of age. Exclusive breast-feeding means, as the term implies, feeding the baby with nothing other than mother’s milk. Even plain water is excluded from the baby’s diet since mother’s milk has enough water to take care of the baby’s needs. Exclusive breast-feeding has the twin benefits of providing adequate and optimal nutrition for the baby and at the same time preventing the baby from the effects of harmful germs that accompanies artificial feeding. Thus exclusive breast-feeding improves nutrition, health and development of infants and young children, ensuring their survival.
Breast-feeding is important for mental growth as well. Many studies done in our country as well as abroad have proved that breast fed babies have a better mental development compared to the babies that are fed with other milk. The breast fed babies are also psychologically better off since the skin to skin contact with their mothers helps in better mother-child bonding and overall development of the baby.
Therefore, let us all do our best to promote and support, breastfeeding, which is a gift from our infinitely wise God, so that our babies grow as intended by Him who has made everything to our good.
Breasfeeding is about peace and justice. It is the natural, universal and peaceful way of nurturing our children. In a world often wracked by injustice, violence and war, breastfeeding can be a sentinel of peace – inner peace, peace with other people and peace with the environment”.
Anwar Fazal, Co-founder of WABA and IBFAN, Right Livelihood Award Recipient, 1982.

SMILE PLEASE!
A smile cost nothing, but gives much.
It enriches those who receive,
Without making poorer those who give
It takes but a moment,
Put the memory of it sometimes lasts forever
None is so rich or mighty
That he can get along without it,
And none so poor but that he can be made rich by it.
A smile creates happiness in the home,
Fosters good will in business,
And is the counter sign of friendship.
It brings to rest the weary, cheer to the discouraged,
Sunshine to the sad,
And it is natures best antidote for trouble,
Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen,
For it something that is of no value to anyone until it
Is given away.
Some people are too tired to give you a smile.
Give them one of yours,
As none needs a smile so much as
He who has no more to give.
