From the Scriptures And He (Jesus) said to them all, “If anyone wants to come with me he must forget himself, take up his cross every day, and follow me…” John 14:18-19

Why the Cross Dr. Sarala Krishnamurthy

The
world and its so-called “God-men” ask for, and give, signs, miracles, and
wonders, to prove divinity or power or authority over the universe and its
laws.
To such a world, God, via Paul, in his I Letter to the Corinthians,
Ch 1:vv 22-25, proclaims – “But we preach Christ crucified, - to the Jews a stumbling
block and to the Greeks foolishness, …. but to those who are called,
Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God” (vv 23, 24) and earlier, in
v 21, we are told, “ God, through the foolishness of the message preached,
saves those who believe”!
The up-side–down or “ulta” way to prove power and divinity through
a cross which is voluntarily and cheerfully carried is the key to being
Christ’s follower, for that is what He did and tells us we must do daily,
if we want to be called His disciples (Matt 16:24). No
other philosophy or religion tells of God dying for, and carrying a cross
for, you and me. Nor,
why.
He did so.
What does carrying a cross mean?
In practical terms, for you and I?
And how many of us TRULY DO CARRY our crosses, as we ought?
Reflecting on, and doing this, at this Lenten time, may help us
also, like Christ, to experience Resurrection in our lives so that, we
too, with Him, may (Ephes 1: 19,20) “be seated with Him…. in the heavenly
places”.
For that is the power that we are to be rewarded with, when we do
not falter or fail, in carrying our crosses! Carrying a cross may be -
taking blame or responsibility for another’s mistakes, or sins,
cheerfully and never boasting or talking about it; -
being accepting, kind, and patient with someone you find tiresome
and difficult and really want to avoid; -
seeing good in someone or thing that everyone says is bad; -
cheerfully giving the extra mile in your work, when all you want to
do is go home; -
comforting and encouraging someone who is down and sad, even though
you do not have the time or energy; - being honest and truthful and not boasting about it, when others tell you to lie and cheat and you want their acceptance; etc Carrying a cross is not, and never
was, even for Jesus Christ, easy.
