(Easter Sun Rise Service - Holy Communion 5:30am)
Lent is a season of spring when in nature, we see old leaves shedding and new ones sprouting, and beautiful flowers blooming. There is a change, which reminds us of our spiritual renewal. This is possible for us only through the Death and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Hence, let us briefly understand how the death and resurrection of Jesus would help us in our spiritual renewal; what we as disciples of Christ are expected to do for our spiritual renewal and how we are to be witnesses for Him.
If any one is in Christ he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (II Cor 5:17). John 12:24 says unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone, but if it dies, it produces much grain. The death of Jesus on the cross meant suffering. Because he died, he also rose again. The disciples of Christ are called to deny self, take up the cross and follow Him. The death and burial of Jesus Christ was considered as a failure to those who crucified Him, but to those who believed in Jesus, it was a victory. God’s ultimate victory over death can only be discerned by faith.
The resurrection of Jesus is the key to Christian faith because :- a) Just as he promised, Jesus rose from the dead. Therefore, we can be confident that he will accomplish all he has promised. b) We can be certain of our resurrection because he was resurrected. Death is not the end – there is a future life. c) The power that brought Jesus back to life is available to us to bring our spiritually dead selves back to life. Every Christian can say, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” (Gal.2:20)
Resurrection is not exclusively an experience of life after death. Resurrection happens every day. It is a process of the transformation of our relationships. With the Resurrection Christ brings a new humanity. In Col. 3rd Chapter Paul has written clearly as how a Christian who has been raised with Christ should maintain his/her relationship. For example in V.9 – Lying to one another disrupts unity by destroying trust. It tears down relationships. So be committed to telling the truth.
The Resurrection is the basis for the Church’s witness to the world. Go quickly and tell: The women were to spread the joy of the resurrection. Communication of the Gospel must be done in God’s way, in God’s time and for God’s glory. There is a sense of urgency in the Easter message. The risen Lord commands the Church to go quickly to teach all people everywhere and make them His disciples. It is not an option, but a command to all who call Jesus “Lord”. May the risen Lord make us His faithful followers and strong witnesses for His glory. Amen.
Dying with Jesus, by death reckoned mine,
Living with Jesus, a new life divine,
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine,
Moment by moment, O Lord I am Thine. – Whittle
